In a well-attended event, TecnoVeritas presented their (DNV and BV type-approved) BioHFO
inline biofuel processing system to Technical Directors & Operators in the Greek shipping
community. The BioHFO (Bio Hybrid Fuel Optimizer) is a commercially deployed inline biofuel
processing system that directly reduces EU ETS costs and Fuel EU compliance liabilities for
vessels already in operation.

TecnoVeritas BioHFO’s defining feature is its patented inline processing architecture. B100 biodiesel and HFO are stored in separate tanks throughout the voyage and brought together via ultrasonic cavitation just two to three seconds before the injection pumps — eliminating the wax precipitation, asphaltene incompatibility, and centrifuge losses that affect pre-mixed bunker blends. The B100 ratio
adjusts dynamically in real time, tracking engine load continuously and optimizing the blend without fixed ratio constraints or manual intervention. No engine modifications are required. No new fuel tanks. The system integrates into the existing fuel circuit and is fully automated from the ECR. The system is the technical backbone of Portugal’s “Navegação Ecológica” — a €50 million — Portugal’s €50 million national maritime decarbonization program. Across 13 vessels now deployed or under installation, the program has produced an average CII rating improvement of 42% and a 32% reduction in conventional fuel consumption, alongside reductions of 36% in NOx and 27% in SOx.

The fleet currently avoids 77,518 tones of CO₂ annually — the only national-level inline biofuel program of this scale currently operating across an EU commercial fleet. For Greek fleet operators — many managing vessels with substantial EU ETS exposure on intra-European routes — the financial case is direct. With EU ETS at 100% coverage from 2026, a single Panamax bulk carrier now faces over €1 million in annual carbon costs at current EUA prices of approximately €75 per ton. CAPEX on BioHFO delivers a payback period of 2-3 years through ETS cost reduction, accounting for Fuel EU compliance value and fuel savings from improved combustion efficiency.

“Greek ship owners manage close to one quarter of the world’s commercial fleet and carry some of the highest EU ETS exposure of any national fleet,” said Professor Jorge Antunes, CEO of TecnoVeritas. “BioHFO is not a pilot concept. It is installed, class-approved, and generating measurable results on operating vessels right now. What we demonstrated today is that fleet decarbonization does not
require replacing engines, drydocking vessels, or waiting for next-generation fuel infrastructure. The solution is available today.”
