How do Accelleron’s technologies, such as turbochargers, contribute to making maritime cargo transportation more efficient and reducing CO₂ emissions on the path to net zero?
We offer a broad range of products and services, with turbocharging and fuel injection technologies forming the core of our business. Our ambition is to consistently provide benchmark-setting turbocharging solutions that enhance energy efficiency, developed in close collaboration with engine builders.
Regarding our turbochargers, we leverage extensive operating data to optimise performance and maintenance, drawing on a deep understanding of how our units are utilised in the field.
In the field of fuel injection – a sector that is evolving as the industry tests alternative fuels such as methanol and ammonia – we are investing heavily in the research, development, and production of specialised injection equipment designed to support these sustainable energy sources.
Beyond our work with engine builders, we provide a robust aftermarket portfolio to enhance the performance of the existing fleet. We recognise that high-performing products require ongoing support to maintain their efficiency; therefore, we provide comprehensive global service solutions.
Accelleron offers a broad service portfolio that extends beyond the products themselves to include efficient, value-added processes for our customers. Through lifecycle service agreements, we support our clients in optimising their operations and streamlining service execution.
Finally, a third pillar of our strategy focuses on digital, software-based services. We provide ship operators with insights and advice designed to maintain newbuilding-level performance for as long as possible, ensuring maximum operational efficiency.
Why does Accelleron emphasise cross-sector collaboration (e.g., environmental groups, legislators, financial institutions, ship owners, etc.) as essential to achieving net-zero cargo transportation globally?
When considering the shipping industry’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, it is clear that this is an enormous task, particularly when layered on top of the industry’s existing challenges. We are seeing trade disruptions occur at increasingly short intervals, with shipping positioned at the epicentre of geopolitical instability. Thus, there are numerous external factors to which we must adapt by becoming more agile.
Regarding decarbonisation, the shipping industry can take significant strides on its own. There is a strong consensus on the way forward: we must first maximise the efficiency of the existing fleet through upgrades, retrofits, and operational improvements, followed by the adoption of lower-carbon fuels such as LNG or biofuels.
However, the one challenge the industry cannot overcome in isolation is the large-scale production of these new fuels. This requires deep, cross-sectoral collaboration to unlock the necessary financing and incentivise investors. By sharing the burden with other sectors that also require green fuels, we can effectively de-risk these investments. This collaborative approach is essential, as it highlights the reality that shipping cannot achieve energy transition on its own.
What timeline do you consider realistic for large-scale adoption of zero-emission technologies in shipping, and what milestones need to be achieved first?
It is difficult to pinpoint the exact timeline for this transition, but considering the lead times required for the development of green fuel production infrastructure, significant fuel availability is unlikely before the second half of the next decade at the earliest. However, as we mentioned previously, the timeline remains unpredictable.
We are already seeing substantial investments in green fuel production. To ensure long-term viability, we clearly need a global regulatory framework that creates a level playing field between traditional fossil fuels and these more expensive, future-proof alternatives. Without a cohesive, net-zero regulatory mechanism, it will be difficult to avoid a fragmented landscape, which would be detrimental to a global, competitive industry such as shipping. Whether this global consensus will be reached in the near term or further down the line remains highly uncertain; nevertheless, it is the critical milestone the industry is waiting for.
In parallel, we see local initiatives, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region and China. In these markets, the adoption of green fuels is driven not only by environmental goals but also by economic growth and national security imperatives. This may provide a pathway for the global shipping industry to move forward, while we remain in a period of intense debate, exploration, and uncertainty.
In the meantime, our priority is to ensure that the necessary technology is ready when the market demands it. We are focusing on developing engines capable of running on these alternative fuels, supported by our core products – both in fuel injection systems and turbocharging.
