WITH CARBON MARKETS
In one of the most significant upgrades since 2005, EU
legislators expanded the scope of the European carbon
market - the EU Emissions Trading System - to include
emissions from international shipping as of 1 January
2024.
This move means that ship operators must start paying
an explicit cost for their CO emissions for the first

time, driving a stronger focus on finding ways to
reduce maritime emissions and accelerating the long-term
transition to cleaner shipping fuels.
But what do the EU ETS rules mean for shipping companies
in the short term, and what must they do to comply with
this legally binding system and avoid its heavy financial
penalties?
