                                                                              EU ETS: A sufficient measure for the faster
                                                                              adoption of green technologies?
                                                                              The EU ETS has been heavily criticised in
                                                                              recent years, not only under the assump-
                                                                              tion that it is inefficiently designed but also
                                                                              because it constitutes a regional measure,
                                                                              thereby distorting competition between
                                                                              companies that trade with European import-
                                                                              ers and exporters and those that do not. The
                                                                              criticism is also based on the fact that tran-
                                                                              shipments have increased in many ports,
                                                                              such as those in North Africa.
                                                                              In this context, participants were asked to
                                                                              express their views on the effectiveness of
                                                                              the EU ETS in achieving what it has prom-
                                                                              ised, namely, to accelerate the adoption of
                                                                              alternative fuels and green technologies in
                                                                              shipping.
