GREEN SHIPPING / SURVEY

alternative fuels are currently facing
time-consuming challenges related
to cost, availability, and sufficient
infrastructure, among others.
As a result, shipping is going
through a period of uncertainty
and “patience”, where investing in
ambitious propulsion technologies
is risky but, at the same time, the
need to reduce the environmental
footprint demands action. In this
context, the participants were
asked whether it might be more
beneficial to enhance ships’ exist-
ing operational performance and
reduce their sailing speed (down Disagree
to the limit of their optimal energy
efficiency), rather than install green 17%
technologies that are not yet fully
developed.
The majority of the participants
agree with this approach to a
high degree: 29% agree and 31%
strongly agree. Consequently, six

If we consider those who agree
with this particular approach as a
separate sample, the distribution
of their answers to the question
regarding the “main challenge
faced by the shipping industry in
terms of its green transition goals”
does not differ significantly from
the distribution of the total sam-
ple’s answers.
However, it differs significantly
when it comes to the evaluation
of the EU ETS, with 69% of those
who agree with the aforementioned
approach (compared to 56% for
the total sample) considering it an
ineffective measure, 21% (com-
pared to 29% for the total sam- Neither disagree Strongly

total sample) characterising it as 19% 31%
