Vessels are becoming increasingly instrumented & software-drivenHow are digitalisation and AI currently influencing your fleet's competitiveness in terms of freight rates, operating costs, and ESG performance?Freight rates remain market-driven, so digitalisation does not directly influence pricing. Its real impact is on operating costs and ESG performance, which is where we focus our efforts.Fuel optimisation is a priority, as fuel represents both the largest cost component and the primary driver of emissions. We also focus on system integration, ensuring data flows across crewing, technical management, performance, and finance without being repeatedly re-entered. On the AI front, we take a practical approach by applying it to areas such as PSC risk assessment, procurement patterns, crew planning, and the automation of repetitive, low-value tasks. To what extent do data analytics and predictive models contribute to the reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions on a day-to-day basis? They contribute significantly, but only when built on a strong data foundation, which is often underestimated. With real-time sensor data, we move beyond traditional noon reports to achieve live visibility on hull and propeller performance, trim, weather routing, and auxiliary load. Day-to-day improvements come from a series of small, informed decisions, such as adjusting speed to meet ETA requirements, optimising trim, scheduling hull cleaning, and managing generator loads.Predictive models build on this by forecasting fuel consumption per voyage and identifying anomalies early. While each individual gain may be incremental, the cumulative impact across a fleet is meaningful. How is the role of seafarers and shorebased teams evolving with the introduction of AI, remote operations, and smart vessels?Vessels are becoming increasingly instrumented and software-driven, which requires crews to develop stronger digital capabilities and adapt how they work. The skill profile is evolving, with greater emphasis on cyber awareness, data litOpinions expressed byLars Laugen, Chief Digital Transformation Officerat OSM ThomeSmart shippingLars Laugen shares his perspective on how digitalisation is reshaping competitiveness, efficiency, and resilience across a large global fleet. He discusses the practical impact of digital tools and AI on fuel optimisation and emissions reduction, the evolving relationship between seafarers and shore-based teams, and the growing importance of cyber security in an increasingly connected maritime ecosystem. 188 NX
