also operate in European coastal waters and
beyond. As there is no need to tranship the
cargo between different modes of transport, this
transport solution creates huge value-added.
This applies to planned transport operations to
supply hydrogen from Spain and Portugal, for
example, but also to transport the CO that is

expelled at the designated offshore fields, which
are often located in the North Sea.
To make the transport operations as sustain-
able and resource-efficient as possible, a Wind
Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS), a kind of
sail, supports the diesel-electric “future fuel-
ready” drive system. The enormous experience
gained from other HGK Shipping designs for
optimising operations in shallow waters has also
been integrated into the “Vanguard” concept.
MULTILATERAL COOPERATION ON THE
USE OF VESSELS FUELLED BY BIO-
LNG
Toyota Motor Europe, Ford of Europe, and
another major European vehicle manufac-
turer are set to achieve major reductions in
emissions from their logistics chain by using
vessels fuelled by bioLNG for cargo transport
across Europe, after signing up for the United
European Car Carriers’ (UECC) Sail for Change
sustainability program.
The combined yearly emissions reduction for
UECC from the manufacturer trio is estimated
at around 80,000 tonnes or over one-third of its
global Scope 1 emissions from ship operations
of approximately 220,000 tonnes.
As well as boosting their environmental per-
formance with lower Scope 3 emissions, all
three vehicle manufacturers will be able to
