OPINIONS ON GREEN SHIPPING
Dimitris Alexopoulos addresses critical issues in the industry’s decarbonisation,
emphasising the importance of balancing environmental goals with economic considerations
to ensure the industry's competitiveness and the long-term success of decarbonisation
initiatives.
THE PROGRESS
OF THE INDUSTRY’S
DECARBONISATION
WILL NOT BE LINEAR
35% (almost one in three) of the survey participants
would invest in neither CO2 capture systems nor in LNG,
methanol or ammonia engines to improve the energy
efficiency of a newly built ship. Does this finding raise
concerns about the pace of the industry’s decarboni-
sation?
Under the International Maritime Organisation’s
(IMO) climate strategy, international shipping
aims to reach net-zero GHG emissions by around
2050. The targets of the IMO’s GHG Strategy,
initially adopted in 2018 and revised in July 2023,
are widely accepted as optimistic as they are
too far in the future and depend on numerous
factors. However, the main issue was and still is
technological.
The necessary technology in terms of machinery,
infrastructure, and availability of alternative fuels
is not yet available on a large enough scale. While
there has been progress across the board – in
the development and production of zero-carbon
by Dimitris Alexopoulos, fuels and their respective engines, CO2 capture
Managing Director systems, etc. – none of the proposed solutions
at Orpheus Marine Transport Corporation
are economically viable at the moment. It is,
