The impressive figure of 136 Becker Mewis Ducts® currently in operation means a reduction of 250,000 t of CO2 by March 2013.
The Becker Mewis Duct® is a highly-efficient energy-saving device developed, manufactured and distributed by Becker Marine Systems. The duct is placed in front of the propeller for the purpose of improving water flow to the propeller and increasing propeller efficiency. Average of fuel savings of 6% has been verified by model tests and vessel operations. Combined with a Becker Rudder, the improvements in propulsion and fuel saving was able to be enhanced up to 8%.
Since launching the Becker Mewis Duct® – just four years ago – more than 400 orders have been placed. The environmental aspect of CO2 of 250,000 t of CO from London to New York (or the annual operation of 78,000 cars).
One new order was placed by STX Marine on behalf of the owner STX Pan Ocean for the delivery of ten Becker Mewis Duct® for the 57,000 dwt open hatch bulk carrier newbuildings under construction at STX Offshore & Shipbuilding sites in China and Korea.
These ten Becker Mewis Duct® along with nine Becker Mewis Duct® previously delivered add up to 19 identical Becker Mewis Duct® supplied to gain significant propulsion efficiency for these open hatch bulk carriers.
In addition to the Becker Mewis Duct®, a new product was launched at the end of last year; the Becker Twisted Fin®. Since the first installation at the beginning of this year seven 7,100 teu container vessels have been equipped with the Becker Twisted Fin®, reducing the use of energy by up to 3% on a daily basis.
One of the major points of Becker’s company philosophy is environmental protection, which is why the new Becker Twisted Fin® was developed for faster vessels as an add-on to Becker Mewis Duct®.
