Safety4Sea Energy Efficiency Forum successfully concluded on 8th March 2012

The Safety4Sea Energy Efficiency Forum, a PRO BONO event, successfully completed on 8th of March 2012 in Athens, covering a range of Technical, Operational and Market Based Issues regarding Energy Efficiency in Shipping.

The event has been well attended by over 250 delegates at the venue representing more than 140 companies. The event organized by IBS Marine Consulting Group and sponsored by MARORKA, Dorian Hellas and Transmar Shipping.

During his welcome address Mr Apostolos Belokas, as the Forum chairman outlined the objectives of this PRO BONO event, including enhancing Energy Efficiency Awareness, promoting Best Practices and providing for exchange of ideas.

Presentations were given in two sessions as follows :

Session 1 : Technical Measures

Georgios Remoundos of Ministry of Development, Competitiveness & Shipping, Pollution Prevention Equipment & Cargoes Department covered the latest MEPC 63 developments and outlined the latest GHG Legislation

Professor Harilaos N. Psaraftis from NTUA covered issues regarding Green house gases after EEDI adoption and highlighted key issues regarding the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI)

Dr John Kokarakis of ABS Europe gave a detailed presentation covering a wide range of uncertainties regarding the Determination of EEDI

Spyridon Zolotas, of RINA presented an up to date study of RINA on the EEDI Calculation study for Ro Ro Pax ships

Session 2 : Operational and Market Based Measures

Apostolos Belokas, Managing Editor of Safety4sea.com gave a presentation on the Market Based Measures discussed on the IMO and presented some preliminary feedback from Safety4Sea Energy Efficiency Survey.

Stavros Meidanis of Lloyds Register presented the ISO 50001 new International Standard regarding Energy Management and the application in shipping

Cpt. Stephen Bligh of DNV gave a presentation of Energy Efficiency issues in terms of Operational Measures and also presented the DNV Triple E certification scheme for ship operators

Jan Fransen, of Green Award Foundation analysed the Energy Efficiency Measures promoted by Green Award as a guidance to ship operators

Dr Jon Agust Thorsteinsson, of Marorka gave a presentation on Energy management Solutions and energy management monitoring.

Both sessions ended with a round table discussion and exchange with the audience.

It is worth mentioning that during the forum the preliminary results of the Safety4Sea Energy Efficiency Survey have been presented to the audience. The survey will be open for participation until June 2012 and results shall be widely circulated to the market and key industry associations.
