Following the successful International Symposia on Maritime Safety organized by the University of Piraeus in 1998, the University of the Aegean in 2001 and the National Technical University of Athens in 2007, the laboratory of Maritime Economics, Management and Maritime Accidents of the Department of Maritime Studies of the University of Piraeus organized with great success the fourth International Symposium of Maritime Safety, Security and Environmental Protection (MASSEP) on 30th and 31st May 2013 at the Metropolitan Hotel in Athens, with the collaboration of the University of the Aegean and the National Technical University of Athens.
The Symposium brought together ship operators, managers, academics and policy-makers to debate on important issues of the shipping industry, as regards safety, security and environmental protection.
Prof. Konstantinos Giziakis of the Department of Maritime Studies of the University of Piraeus addressed the Opening Letter from Kostis Mousouroulis, Minister of the Hellenic Ministry of Shipping and the Aegean while welcoming addresses were given from the following:

John Cotzias, PRESIDENT, HELLENIC SHIPBROKERS ASSOCIATION

Dr. Konstantinos Rokkos, Governor of the International Propeller Club of the United States, International Port of Piraeus
The interesting papers presented covered various aspects of the industry related to maritime safety, such as Marine Accidents, Investigation & Communicational Skills Related to Marine Accidents, Recent Developments in Ship Recycling, Tools for Improving Marine Safety & Environmental Protection, Conventions and Legal Regulations Related to Marine Safety and Economic and Operational Issues Related to Marine Safety.
